Explore Botswana

Botswana, located in Southern Africa, is a landlocked country known for its vast savannas, diverse wildlife, and stable democracy. The culture of Botswana is influenced by its indigenous peoples, including the Batswana (Tswana people), as well as colonial and international influences. English and Setswana are the official languages of Botswana, with Setswana being the most widely spoken language among the population. Setswana is also considered the national language and is used in government, education, and media. The official currency of Botswana is the Botswana Pula (BWP), which is subdivided into 100 thebe. The Pula has been the country's currency since 1976 and is used for all transactions within Botswana. Botswana's culture is rich and diverse, with traditional music, dance, and storytelling playing an important role in daily life. Setswana music, featuring instruments like the segaba (traditional violin) and moropa (traditional drum), is performed during cultural celebrations and festivals. Traditional dances like the setapa and tsutsube are also integral to Botswana's cultural heritage. Botswana's cuisine is influenced by its diverse ethnic groups and natural resources, featuring dishes like seswaa (slow-cooked beef), bogobe (maize porridge), and morogo (wild spinach). Meat, especially beef and goat, is a staple of Botswana's diet, while fruits and vegetables like maize, sorghum, and beans are also widely consumed. The country's rich cultural heritage is showcased in its traditional arts and crafts, including basket weaving, pottery, and woodcarving. Botswana is known for its high-quality craftwork, particularly the intricate baskets made by the women of the San (Bushmen) and Hambukushu tribes. Botswana's stunning natural landscapes, including the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, and Kalahari Desert, attract tourists from around the world. Safari tours, birdwatching, and cultural experiences with indigenous communities are popular activities for visitors seeking to explore Botswana's wilderness and wildlife. Despite its challenges, Botswana's culture remains resilient and continues to evolve, reflecting the country's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while embracing modernity. The warmth and hospitality of the Batswana people, combined with the country's natural beauty and diverse cultural traditions, make Botswana a captivating destination for travelers seeking an authentic African experience.
