Explore Cape Verde

Cape Verde, officially known as the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country located in the central Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of West Africa. Comprising ten volcanic islands and five islets, Cape Verde is known for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and music scene. Portuguese is the official language of Cape Verde, reflecting its colonial history, and is spoken by the majority of the population. Cape Verdean Creole, a blend of Portuguese and African languages, is also widely spoken as a mother tongue. The official currency of Cape Verde is the Cape Verdean Escudo (CVE), which is divided into 100 centavos. The Escudo has been the country's currency since independence in 1975. Cape Verde's culture is a unique blend of African, European, and Creole influences, shaped by its diverse ethnic heritage. The country's music, particularly the genres of morna and funaná, is internationally renowned, with artists like Cesária Évora gaining global acclaim. Cape Verdean cuisine is influenced by its maritime geography and features a variety of seafood dishes, including cachupa (a slow-cooked stew with beans, corn, and fish or meat), pastel (fried pastry filled with fish or meat), and caldo de peixe (fish soup). The country's rich cultural heritage is also evident in its traditional arts and crafts, including weaving, pottery, and basketry. Cape Verdean artisans produce a wide range of handcrafted goods, including woven textiles, ceramic vessels, and straw hats, which are often sold in local markets and exported to other countries. Cape Verde's stunning natural landscapes, including white-sand beaches, rugged mountains, and volcanic terrain, attract tourists from around the world. Outdoor activities such as hiking, surfing, and whale-watching are popular, while cultural attractions like the colonial city of Cidade Velha offer insights into the country's history and heritage. Despite its challenges, Cape Verde's culture remains vibrant and resilient, reflecting the country's strong sense of identity and pride in its heritage. The warmth and hospitality of the Cape Verdean people, combined with the country's cultural richness and natural beauty, make Cape Verde a captivating destination for travelers seeking to explore West Africa.
