Explore Fez City

Fez, also spelled Fes, is one of the most historically and culturally significant cities in Morocco. It is located in the northern part of the country and is the capital of the Fès-Meknès region. Here are some key aspects of Fez: Fez is renowned for its UNESCO-listed Medina, which is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval cities in the world. The Medina of Fez is a maze of narrow alleys, bustling souks (markets), and historic landmarks, including mosques, madrasas (Islamic schools), and traditional Moroccan houses known as riads. Fez is home to numerous historical sites and architectural marvels. The University of Al Quaraouiyine, founded in 859 CE, is considered the oldest continuously operating university in the world. Other notable landmarks include the Al-Attarine Madrasa, Bou Inania Madrasa, and the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque. Fez is famous for its traditional craftsmanship, particularly in the production of ceramics, leather goods, and textiles. The city's artisans continue to practice ancient techniques passed down through generations, and visitors can witness their craftsmanship in action in the souks of the Medina. Fez offers a rich culinary heritage, with a variety of traditional Moroccan dishes to savor. Tagine, couscous, pastilla, and harira are just a few of the local specialties to try. The city's street food scene is also vibrant, with vendors selling snacks like grilled meats, pastries, and sweets. Fez has a vibrant cultural scene, with festivals, music performances, and art exhibitions held throughout the year. The city is known for its Andalusian music traditions, as well as its vibrant storytelling and poetry recitation traditions. Fez is famous for its ancient tanneries, where animal hides are processed using traditional methods. Visitors can tour the tanneries and observe the dyeing and tanning process, although the smell can be strong, so it's advisable to bring a sprig of mint to ward off the odor. Fez offers a range of accommodation options, from luxury riads and boutique hotels in the Medina to modern hotels in the newer parts of the city. Staying in a traditional riad is a popular choice for visitors seeking an authentic Moroccan experience. From Fez, visitors can embark on day trips to nearby attractions such as the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the holy town of Moulay Idriss, and the scenic Middle Atlas Mountains. Overall, Fez is a city steeped in history, culture, and tradition, offering visitors a glimpse into Morocco's rich heritage and centuries-old way of life.
