Explore Hanoi

The city of Hanoi, located in northern Vietnam, is the country's capital and one of its most culturally rich and historically significant cities. With a history dating back over a thousand years, Hanoi is known for its charming blend of ancient traditions, French colonial architecture, bustling streets, and vibrant cultural scene. Hanoi has a rich history that dates back to 1010 when it was founded as Thang Long, meaning "Ascending Dragon." Over the centuries, it has served as the capital of various Vietnamese dynasties, experiencing periods of both prosperity and conflict. The Old Quarter, also known as the 36 Streets, is the heart of Hanoi. It's characterized by narrow streets lined with old colonial buildings, traditional shophouses, and bustling markets. Each street in the Old Quarter traditionally specialized in a particular trade or craft. During the French colonial period, Hanoi was extensively developed, and the French Quarter reflects this influence. Wide boulevards, elegant buildings, and tree-lined streets give this part of the city a distinct European feel. The French Quarter is home to many government buildings, embassies, and upscale boutiques. Hanoi boasts numerous cultural attractions, including the Temple of Literature, a Confucian temple and site of Vietnam's first university; the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, where the embalmed body of the revered Vietnamese leader is preserved; and the One Pillar Pagoda, a historic Buddhist temple dating back to the 11th century. This picturesque lake, located in the heart of Hanoi, is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The Ngoc Son Temple, situated on a small island in the lake, adds to its charm. Legend has it that a giant turtle in the lake gave a sword to Emperor Le Loi, which he used to drive out Chinese invaders. Hanoi is renowned for its street food culture, with sidewalk vendors serving up delicious and affordable dishes such as pho (Vietnamese noodle soup), bun cha (grilled pork with noodles), banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich), and fresh spring rolls. Exploring the street food scene is a must for visitors to the city. A unique cultural experience in Hanoi is watching a water puppet show. Originating in the villages of the Red River Delta region, water puppetry involves puppets performing on water, accompanied by live music and singing. Overall, Hanoi offers visitors a captivating blend of history, culture, and culinary delights, making it a must-visit destination in Vietnam.
