Explore Korea, Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), commonly known as North Korea, is a country located on the northern part of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia. Despite its isolation from much of the world, North Korea boasts a rich cultural heritage shaped by centuries of history and unique political circumstances. The culture of North Korea is deeply influenced by its ideology of Juche, which emphasizes self-reliance, national unity, and reverence for the leadership of the ruling Kim family. This ideology permeates all aspects of society, including art, literature, and daily life. The Korean language, known as Hangul, is the official language of North Korea, serving as a unifying force among its people. Traditional Korean music, dance, and cuisine are celebrated as expressions of national identity, with performances and rituals often reflecting themes of loyalty to the state and its leadership. The official currency of North Korea is the North Korean won (KPW), although the country's closed economy and limited international trade make it difficult to assess its true value. While North Korea remains largely isolated from the outside world, visitors to the country are offered carefully curated tours that showcase its historical landmarks, revolutionary sites, and propaganda monuments. Despite its political tensions and unique challenges, North Korea's culture continues to fascinate and intrigue the world.

Tourist Visa

As an Indian citizen planning to visit the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) for tourism, you are required to obtain a tourist visa. Unlike many countries, North Korea does not issue tourist visas directly to individuals; instead, all tourism is organized through state-approved travel agencies.

How to Apply for a North Korea Tourist Visa

1. Choose a State-Approved Tour Operator: You must book your tour through a licensed travel agency that has authorization from North Korea's State General Bureau of Tourism. These agencies will handle your visa application and itinerary.

2. Provide Required Documents:

  • A valid Indian passport with at least 6 months of validity.
  • A recent passport-sized photograph with a white background.
  • Completed visa application form (provided by the tour operator).
  • Personal details and travel information as requested by the agency.

3. Visa Issuance: The tourist visa is issued in the form of a separate document known as a "tourist card," not a stamp in your passport. This card is collected upon your departure from North Korea.

4. Travel Restrictions: During your stay, you must remain within the designated areas specified by your tour and be accompanied by a government-approved guide at all times.

Important Notes

  • No Independent Travel: Independent travel within North Korea is not permitted. All visits must be part of an organized tour.
  • Entry Points: Most travelers enter North Korea via China or Russia, either by air or train. Ensure you have the necessary visas for these transit countries.
  • Processing Time: Visa processing typically takes 15 to 20 days.
