Explore Mount Kailash

Mount Kailash, located in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, is one of the most revered and mysterious mountains in the world. Here’s a brief overview: Mount Kailash holds immense spiritual importance in several religions: Hinduism: It is considered the abode of Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in the Hindu pantheon. Hindus believe that Lord Shiva resides at the summit of Mount Kailash with his consort, Parvati. Buddhism: In Buddhism, Mount Kailash is associated with the tantric meditation deity Demchok (Chakrasamvara), who represents supreme bliss. It is also believed to be the site where Milarepa, a great Tibetan yogi, defeated the Bon master Naro Bon-chung in a contest of magical powers. Jainism: For Jains, Mount Kailash is known as Mount Ashtapada, where Rishabhadeva, the first Tirthankara, attained nirvana. Bon: The Bon religion, which predates Buddhism in Tibet, considers Mount Kailash the axis mundi (world axis) and the sacred nine-story Swastika Mountain, upon which the founder of Bon, Tonpa Shenrab, descended from heaven. Mount Kailash stands at an altitude of 6,638 meters (21,778 feet) and is part of the Transhimalaya range. Its distinctive shape, resembling a pyramid, and its remote location add to its mystical allure. The mountain is often described as unclimbed and sacred, with climbing attempts considered sacrilegious. Pilgrims from various faiths undertake the challenging 52-kilometer (32-mile) circumambulation, known as the Kailash Kora, around the base of the mountain. Completing this trek is believed to cleanse one's sins and bring spiritual enlightenment. The kora usually takes about three days for fit and acclimatized pilgrims, while some take up to a week. The path reaches its highest point at the Dolma La pass, at an altitude of 5,630 meters (18,471 feet). The area around Mount Kailash is also home to two sacred lakes: Lake Manasarovar: Considered the highest freshwater lake in the world, it is believed to be the source of purity and spiritual energy. Lake Rakshastal: Located near Lake Manasarovar, it is associated with the demon king Ravana and is considered inauspicious, in contrast to the auspicious Lake Manasarovar. Mount Kailash has inspired countless myths, legends, and artistic expressions in the cultures and religions of South and Central Asia. Its symbolic representation as the cosmic axis and center of the universe underscores its profound cultural impact. Mount Kailash's spiritual significance, combined with its remote and rugged beauty, makes it a pilgrimage destination that transcends religious boundaries, drawing seekers of spiritual and mystical experiences from around the world.
