Explore Mtskheta

Mtskheta is a historic town located in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of Georgia, situated at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, just a short distance from the capital city of Tbilisi. It holds immense cultural and religious significance as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As the former capital of the Kingdom of Iberia, Mtskheta served as the political and religious center of ancient Georgia. It was here that Christianity was first proclaimed as the state religion in the early 4th century, making it the spiritual heart of the Georgian Orthodox Church. One of the most prominent landmarks in Mtskheta is the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, a masterpiece of medieval Georgian architecture and one of the most sacred sites in the country. Legend has it that Svetitskhoveli houses the robe of Christ, making it a destination for pilgrims and tourists alike. The cathedral's intricate frescoes, ornate carvings, and imposing structure are a testament to Georgia's rich cultural heritage. Another significant site in Mtskheta is the Jvari Monastery, perched on a hill overlooking the town and offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. Dating back to the 6th century, Jvari is an architectural marvel, blending elements of Byzantine, Armenian, and Georgian styles. It is revered as a symbol of the spread of Christianity throughout the region and a symbol of Georgian national identity. In addition to its religious sites, Mtskheta boasts a charming old town with narrow cobblestone streets, traditional Georgian houses, and artisan workshops. Visitors can explore local markets, sample authentic Georgian cuisine, and immerse themselves in the town's rich history and culture. Overall, Mtskheta is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Georgian history, architecture, and spirituality. Its ancient monuments, stunning scenery, and vibrant atmosphere make it a cultural gem and a highlight of any trip to Georgia.
