Explore Paro

Paro, located in the Paro Valley of Bhutan, is a picturesque and historically significant town known for its stunning landscapes, ancient temples, and cultural richness. Here’s a descriptive overview of Paro: Paro Valley is one of the most beautiful regions in Bhutan, with its lush green fields, terraced farms, and meandering Paro Chhu (river). The valley is surrounded by majestic mountains, providing a serene and idyllic setting. One of the most iconic landmarks in Bhutan, Paro Taktsang is a sacred Buddhist monastery perched on a cliffside, about 900 meters (3,000 feet) above the valley floor. It is believed to be the meditation site of Guru Rinpoche, who is credited with introducing Buddhism to Bhutan. The challenging hike to the monastery rewards visitors with breathtaking views and a sense of spiritual tranquility. Rinpung Dzong,Also known as Paro Dzong, this fortress-monastery is a stunning example of traditional Bhutanese architecture. Built in the 17th century, it serves as the administrative and religious center of Paro. The dzong hosts the annual Paro Tshechu, a vibrant festival featuring masked dances and cultural performances. Housed in the ancient Ta Dzong watchtower, the National Museum offers a comprehensive insight into Bhutanese culture, history, and art. The museum's collection includes religious relics, traditional costumes, weaponry, and exquisite thangka paintings. One of Bhutan's oldest and most revered temples, Kyichu Lhakhang dates back to the 7th century. It is believed to have been built by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo to pin down a demoness and spread Buddhism in the region. The temple complex exudes a sense of peace and spirituality. Drukgyel Dzong,This historic fortress, now in ruins, was built in the 17th century to commemorate Bhutan's victory over Tibetan invaders. Although partially destroyed by fire in the 1950s, the dzong remains an important cultural site and offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, including Mount Jomolhari. Paro is dotted with traditional Bhutanese farmhouses, many of which offer homestays for visitors. Staying in a farmhouse provides a unique opportunity to experience Bhutanese rural life, enjoy authentic local cuisine, and engage in cultural activities such as archery and traditional hot stone baths. Though not in Paro, a day trip to the nearby Punakha Valley offers the chance to visit the Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of Bhutan's longest suspension bridges. It spans the Pho Chhu River and provides a thrilling experience with panoramic views of the valley. Paro offers a variety of dining experiences, from traditional Bhutanese restaurants to cafes and bakeries. Local delicacies include ema datshi (chili cheese stew), momos (dumplings), and phaksha paa (pork with red chilies). Paro is home to Bhutan's only international airport, known for its challenging approach due to the surrounding mountains. The airport itself is a charming structure built in traditional Bhutanese style, providing a warm welcome to visitors arriving in the country. Overall, Paro is a captivating destination that combines natural beauty, rich history, and cultural depth, making it a must-visit for anyone traveling to Bhutan.
