Western Sahara

Western Sahara, located in North Africa, is a region with a long-standing and complex political status. It is bordered by Morocco to the north, Algeria to the northeast, Mauritania to the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The status of Western Sahara is a subject of international dispute. Historically, Western Sahara was a Spanish colony until 1975 when Spain withdrew, leading to conflicting territorial claims by neighboring countries. The indigenous Sahrawi people, represented by the Polisario Front, sought self-determination, proclaiming the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in 1976. Morocco, however, also claimed the territory and has since maintained de facto control over most of Western Sahara. The United Nations has been involved in efforts to find a resolution, calling for a referendum on self-determination for the people of Western Sahara. However, the referendum has not taken place due to ongoing disputes over voter eligibility and other issues. The landscape of Western Sahara includes vast desert expanses, rocky plateaus, and a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. The region is known for its natural beauty, but the political situation has led to challenges for the local population. The Sahrawi people have faced difficulties related to displacement, human rights concerns, and the impact of the decades-long conflict. Refugee camps in neighboring Algeria house a significant Sahrawi population. The status of Western Sahara remains a sensitive and unresolved issue in international relations. Efforts by the United Nations and other organizations continue to seek a peaceful and mutually agreeable solution for the people of Western Sahara.
